: Placebo and nocebo effects are potent, prevalent, and poorly understood. Respectively defined as the therapeutic and harmful effects when given a physiologically inert treatment, placebo and nocebo effects can result from any type of medical intervention. They are thought to be caused by the context surrounding medical interventions on disease trajectories, as opposed to properties inherent to the medical intervention themselves.
