Thin Greater Horns of the Hyoid Bone

2016
A victim of compression of neck is more likely to have fracture of hyoid bone if his hyoid bone is not strong. The present study was conducted to determine the incidence of thin greater horns of hyoid bone. Thin greater horns were found in 17.7% of 130 hyoid bones. They were found in both sexes and in almost all age groups. Hyoid bones with thin greater horns were found bilaterally in 9.3% of cases and unilaterally in 7.8% of the cases. Thin Greater horns were more common on the left side compared to right side. Females aged between 21–30 years showed high incidence of bilaterally thin greater horns. Greater horns of thickness less than 2mm could be more vulnerable to fracture compared to Greater horns of more thickness.
