Electromyography and constipation

2010
Perineal electrophysiologic testing may be useful in case of a distal constipation. Indeed, distal constipation, frequently due to anismus, can lead to a pelvic floor denervation, often secondary to a stretch pudendal neuropathy. This neuropathy can induce faecal incontinence in the long term. Electromyographic investigations of the perineal muscles, sacral latencies and pudendal nerve terminal motor latencies are the main tests which demonstrate such neuropathy.
