Background Previous studies have confirmed the safety of polyethylene glycol plus ascorbic acid for healthy middle-aged adults but not for the elderly. The osmotic pressure of polyethylene glycol plus ascorbic acid is approximately twice that of plasma osmolality and may cause dehydration.
