Bridge Structural Health Monitoring using an FBG-based Architecture

2021
In this paper, we present a vibration monitoring architecture based on the interrogation of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors. The proposed system is parameterised based on the application field and the structure type (construction, bridge, railway, etc.). The fibre elongation and the FBG displacement under external forces like strain is measured through the implemented FBG network. The decision to minimize vibration levels is made based on the measurements carried out and whether the vibration reaches a pre-defined threshold. A real study case the Vincent Thomas Bridge (VTB) is considered to evaluate the performance of the proposed vibration monitoring architecture. For this purpose, real displacement signals obtained from sensor nodes during a seism are used in our simulation.
