1981
This 2nd report of the Shenzhen project examines the plans and progress of economic development in the municipality. In the primary sector the general land use pattern and agricultural practices are reviewed along with recent developments in animal husbandry crop farming and marine and fresh water fish culture. Developments in mining are also considered. In the secondary sector manufacturing growth is discussed with reference to location and structure as well as the factors inducive to foreign participation. In the tertiary sector attention is directed to real estate development in which the provision of residential and commercial buildings is assessed. Transportation is considered in the light of the network pattern and factors for development. As Shenzhen has much to offer as a tourist attraction some discussion centers on the opening up of tourist spots and the provision of tourist accomodations. Other developments reviewed include water supply cemetery and services such as hospitals nurseries and the possibility for solid wastes disposal. Active progress is currently underway in the Shenzhen Municipality particularly within the Special Economic Zones. The region is clearly setting on a course of rapid economic growth. The preferential treatments and the resources available at Shenzhen are great attractions but for some potential investors a cloud of uncertainty on the security of their investment remains. Many of the projects in which contracts have been concluded are still in the preparatory or construction stage and their contribution to the economy will not be apparent until a later time. An appendix presents regulations on speical economic zones in Guangdong Province.
