Made in Birmingham: Reggae Punk Bhangra

2010
The film explores the relationship between a number of distinctive musical genres associated with Birmingham and the role they have played in fostering a new sense of communal identity for diasporic cultures settling in the city. Why has Birmingham’s popular music not had the impact in the general media, or in the discourses of civic pride, as in other cities in the UK associated with their music histories (e.g. Manchester, Liverpool)? What is unique about the relationship of the three musical genres to Birmingham’s identity? To what extent have the genres interacted productively and creatively with each other? These are just some of the questions the film explores.
