Boundary Layer Removal in Ultrafiltration

A large number of processes involving a transport of heat and/or mass between a solid and a fluid are characterized by a thin boundary layer in the vicinity of the wall. The boundary layer offers major resistance to heat and mass transfer and is often a rate limiting factor. Any attempt to reduce the boundary layer thickness, for example by operating under turbulent flow conditions, will improve transport rates. Another way of improving the performance is to remove the boundary layer by using the device described here. In this report, application of the boundary layer removal device to ultrafiltration will be discussed.
