Education in Manufacturing and Robotics

1990
Publisher Summary Research and development activities on computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) need highly skilled engineers with extensive knowledge on information technology and good understanding of manufacturing processes and production engineering practice. These people are required to work within a multidisciplinary team framework to solve complex tasks. The next higher-level role in CIM education comes in the form a person who specializes in various applications, and has an all-round knowledge of the structure of programming languages and expertise in CAD/CAM, artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, safety problems, and lastly in social effects and economical considerations. There seems to be a tendency to assume that someone else will provide the information such as what is to be controlled in a process and how the process will respond when controlled.
