APPLICATION OF THE X-RAY MICROANALYZER FOR THE INVESTIGATIONS OF THE BANDED STRUCTURE OF SINTERED ALUMINUM

1964
The chemical composition of the iron-rich inclusions in sintered aluminum products (SAP) was determined by quantitative static electron probe microanalysis. Similar to the change in mechanical characteristics of cold- worked SAP, a successive refinement of the banded structure at medium deformation and the breaking up of the homogeneous aluminum lines at highest amounts of deformation degrees was observed in metallographic study and in the differential- scanning methods. The dispersion of FeAl/sub 3/ inclusions in the Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-rich heterogeneous matrix was analyzed and the drop in the mean particle diameter with increasing degree of deformation was followed quantitatively by an automatic and selective working attachment.
