Soliton propagation in fiber systems

2009
In this work, we present an application-oriented review of some nonlinear phenomena in optical fiber communication systems. Physics origin behind optical solitons is reported. The fiber loss, soliton interaction, and timing jitter phenomena, which are considered as the most severe obstacles limiting data transmission rate, are reviewed. Other nonlinear effects, less critical for classical optic-fiber soliton-based communication systems, are also described in brief.
