Effect of shock wave on microstructure of silicon steel

2019
Abstract The present study is focused on surface modification by the shock wave and its impact on the microstructure of silicon steel (Fe-Si 6wt %). The shock waves were created by two different methods - by pulsating water jet (PWJ) and by laser shock peening (LSP). Although both methods create shock waves, impact on the microstructure of the sample was different. The sample after PWJ treatment was eroded and contained cavities and tunnels. The surface of samples after LSP has been partly oxidized and re-melted. Cross-section examination of both samples shows plastic deformation, slips and twins, in the microstructure of material. Both methods increased of values of hardness in the subsurface region.
