A BINARY-DECIMAL AND OCTAL-DECIMAL CONVERTER AND ADDING MACHINE

1964
Abstract The machine accepts inputs in binary or octal form and converts them to their decimal equivalents, which are displayed on dekatrons. The input digits are normally set up by hand, though with slight modifications suitable electrical inputs can be accepted, and either straightforward conversion, or addition or subtraction from the currently displayed number, is possible. The maximum capacity is 2 23 −1 (binary or octal) and 10 7 −1 (decimal), and all conversions, etc., take about half a second after the input number is set up. A brief description is also given of a similar but simpler and slower version of the machine, using cold cathode tubes throughout.
