A plate for perpendicular magnetic recording has a template layer below a layer of Ru or Ru alloy, a granular recording layer made of Co alloy formed on said base layer. The template layer includes nanoparticles that are spaced apart by one and are partially embedded in a polymeric material, wherein the nanoparticles project above the surface of the polymer material addition. A seed layer covering the surface of the polymer material and the projecting nanoparticles, and a backing layer of Ru or a Ru alloy covers the seed layer. The projecting nanoparticles serve as the controlled nucleation sites for the Ru or Ru alloy atoms. The distances from the nanoparticles to nanoparticles can be controlled during formation of the template layer. This allows controlling the particle diameter distribution of the Co alloy as well as the distribution of the distance from grain to grain.
