Factors in the Corrosivity of Seawater Used for Secondary Petroleums Recovery

The mathematical equations for the corrosive effects of temperature, velocity, and concentration of depolarizer are discussed, and baseline values are established so that the equations can be used to project corrosion rates. From these, suggested conditioning levels are derived for dissolved oxygen and chlorine and for silt, biological, and scale control. The factors used here for the velocity, temperature, and pit versus general penetration rate relationships are based on limited data. As greater experience is gained and more data are made available (particularly from field installations), refinement of the proportionality constants in the cause-effect relationships can produce any desirable degree of reproducibility.
