Comparative evaluation of analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory effects of various extracts of Illicium verum hook.f (Star anise) in rodents
2021
The current investigation was designed to evaluate the analgesic, antipyretic and anti inflammatory effects of Illicium verum hook.f using three different doses (150, 250 and 350 mg/kg p.o.) in order to verify the traditional uses of this spice. Analgesic effects were evaluated in mice (male, weighing 22-28 g) using hot plate method. methanol, ethanol and aqueous extractsshowed considerable analgesic activity. The anti-inflammatory were assessed by carrageenan induce paw edema model and pyrexia induction thruough brewer’s yeast in rats. The inflammation of paw edema and rectal temperature in rats was reduced significantly (P<0.05) as compared to control group. The behavioral pattern (rearing, grooming and scratching) showed decrease in grooming and rearing, while, scratching activity in mice was increased. This experimental investigation concluded that various extracts of Illicium verum hook.f showed analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects on different doses with various potencies.
