Energy loss of highly charged ions on an aluminum surface

1996
We have measured the energy loss, straggling and reflected charge states of O-q+ (q=1-7) projectiles scattered off a clean Al(110) single crystal surface. The ions were scattered along the [1(1)over bar 0>]-direction of the Al surface under grazing incidence (psi = 1.2 degrees). The angle of observation was varied from 2.5 degrees to 25 degrees. We performed a detailed analysis of the ion energy distributions, depending on incoming and reflected charge states and scattering angle. The experimentally determined energy losses are compared with calculated values. In combination with Monte Carlo simulations of the ion trajectories the analysis provides detailed insight into the scattering event.
