ONTARIO FREIGHT MOVEMENT STUDY : COMPONENT TWO

The second component of this study uses industry/company-specific case studies to test the effectiveness (in terms of CO2 emission-reduction) of alternative distribution methods, and to assess feasibility, including economic consequences. These studies also indentify technical or policy issues which must be addressed to achieve these reductions. This project focuses on carbon-dioxide emissions, which are mainly affected by the type and quantity of fuel used in transport, and by the associated fuel production and distribution process. Other environmental issues, such ans NOx, VOC, ozone producing emissions, noise, etc., are not considered. Similarly, this study does not explore impacts on CO2 emissions of technology developments or operational changes (assessed in the first component of the Ontario Freight Movement Study) or changes in shipment origin or destination (which might arise from longer term economic re-structuring or from broader policy initiatives). However, changes in warehousing locations might be part of a case study, for example as part of a shift from one-mode movement to intermodal movement, or from a hub-and-spoke truck operation for general freight to more direct routings.
