After registration posts he served as resident medical officer to a west African regiment for two years of national service, returning to Cheltenham to do obstetrics. He entered general practice in Stroud, where he built up a thriving practice. He played an active part in the running of Stroud General Hospital, where he was appointed clinical assistant in surgery. He loved field sports, being a keen shot and fly fisherman, and he was a fine craftsman, doing meticulous carpentry and metalwork. He leaves a wife, Elizabeth, and two children.
