STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF REACTOR VESSEL AND ASSOCIATED COMPONENTS. PHASE I

1960
The stress andalysis of the reactor vessel and its associated componerts established a basic configuration that is acceptable with respect to primary and primary + secondary stress considerations. A low carbon steel (SA-302B) was selected for the pressure vessel material based on its beginning of life physical properties and cost per pound. Also, SA-302B has no appreciable decrease in stress allowables for and increase in temperature from 650 deg F to 700 deg F and would allow a design temperature of 700 deg F with no change in vessel dimensions. End of life'' properties of this material should be investigated. A 2 1/4Cr- 1Mo steel was selected for the pressure vessel internals on the basis of its physical properties at 900 deg F, its low cost per pound compared with stainless or inconel, and its elimination of thermal mismstches between the support skirt and the pressure vessel. A segmented skirt design has been chosen as a reference design for the reactor support. Recommendations are made for further studies. (auth)
