YAG Laser in Management of Posterior Capsule Opacification at Dr. Yap Eye Hospital

The aim of this study is to evaluate the YAG laser rate in management of posterior capsular opacity at Dr. Yap Eye Hospital Yogyakarta. We reviewed 255 eyes underwent cataract surgery with IOL implantation between January and February 2001 of 181 patients, 86 were male and 95 were female, 4 of 255 eyes were congenital cataract, 1 eye with uveitis , 2 eyes were traumatic cataract, 2 eyes were juvenile cataract, and 5 eyes with diabetic. The patients who suffered from such condition above were excluded from this study. The Acrysof IOL were implanted in 65 eyes while the rest,190 eyes, were implanted with PMMA IOL. YAG laser was used in management of posterior capsular opacity. Of 65 eyes with Acrysof IOLs PCO occurred in 4 eyes (6.15 %) all were done by YAG laser, and the development of PCO in 176 eyes with PMMA IOLs was in 22 eyes (12.5%). 14 of 26 eyes with PCO were underwent YAG laser capsulotomy, while 12 eyes were not necessary YAG laser capsulotomy due to the grade of PCO. The incidence of PCO was 10.78% (26 of 241 eyes). The rate of YAG laser capsulotomy after cataract surgery with IOL implantation was 7.46 %. There was no serious complication occur after a month follow-up.
