Clinical observation of Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure ventilation in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

2009
Objective To evaluate the efficacy of Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure ventilation in treating patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Methods Sixty patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were randomly divided into two groups. In addition to conventional therapy (inhalation of oxygen and antiinfection therapy), treatment group received Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure ventilation at night for four hours for seven days. Patients in the control group were treated with conventional therapy only. Changes of the oxygen level, cardiac arrhythmia variation and the pulmonary arterial pressure were monitored. Result The level of oxygen, cardiac arrhythmia variation and pulmonary-arterial pressure in the treatment group were significantly changed after Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure ventilation (P0.05~0.01). Conclusion Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure ventilation can improve the symptoms of low oxygen content in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
