Production flexibility for BTX can maximize profits

1984
Worldwide demand for benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX) is projected to grow over 60% between 1981 and 1995. However, individual demands are cyclic because of the dynamic nature of the mature gasoline and petrochemical markets which compete for each. The value of BTX in gasoline, as an octane enhancer and as a petrochemical building block is well known. These values are rarely, if ever, the same. Flexibility in a refinery or petrochemical plant can maximize profits by varying the product mix to maximize benzene, toluene, or xylene production in response to market demand. The Houdry Detol process offers this flexibility by being able to process toluene and heavier feeds into a spectrum of aromatic products.
