A numerical model of coal gasification in entrained flow reactors has been developed. The mixed finite element/finite difference computer model provides a transient description of the turbulent gas dynamics, particle motion, transport phenomena, and chemistry for entrained flow gasification; it has the capability of predicting time-dependent processes in the reactors. Two- and three-dimensional calculations were made for predicting the swirling flows which are typical of the combustion and gasification regimes of current process development unit. 29 references.
