Based on principles of animal welfare, this paper aims to assess the preference of Japaneseornamental fish by in differents environments that can be used as a parameter of well-beingfor the creation of this species in aquariums. We used 96 Japanese ornamental fingerlings ofCarassius auratus and were performed four tests: the preference for different types of substrate,different types of ornamental aquatic plants attached to the substrate, different types ofshelter, and different colors for the environment in its creation in aquariums. At the end, it wasconcluded that this species has a greater preference for fine sand as substratum Valisneria likeplant, with no conclusive results on the preference for shelter and color.
