Blending of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) and polycaprolactone: Characterization and degradation studies

2011
The blending of polymers is a simple and time efficient method to achieve optimal properties for particular applications. The aim of this work is to investigate the physical and chemical properties of the polymer blend of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PBX) and polycaprolactone (PCL) fabricated by solvent casting. Our characterization results show that 10%PBX90%PCL has improved Young's modulus and percentage elongation (%EL) over its parent components. In addition, 10%PBX90%PCL has shown better ability to maintain its tensile strength and %EL after degradation in sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Mass loss analysis also indicated that 10%PBX90%PCL has the least mass loss. In summary, 10%PBX90%PCL shows good mechanical and degradation properties.
