THE EFFECT OF THE USE OF ANKLE FOOT ORTHOSES IN THE PERFORMANCE OF TUG IN CHILDREN WITH CEREBRAL PALSY SPASTIC AND ITS CORRELATION WITH THE GMFCS. 2014. 38f. Trabalho de Conclusao de Curso (Graduacao) Universidade de Brasilia, Graduacao em Fisioterapia, Faculdade de Ceilândia. Brasilia, 2014. Introduction: Ankle foot orthoses are indicated to improve walking performance in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Objective: To investigate the effect of using ankle foot orthoses in the Timed Up and Go test (TUG) in children with CP diagnosis and verify the correlation between the TUG and the System of Gross Motor Function Classification (GMFCS). Methods: This was an observational, analytical and cross-sectional study, consisting of a sample of 32 children from the Centro de Reabilitacao e Readaptacao Dr. Henrique Santillo CRER, Goiânia / Brazil. We included children aged between 4 and 12 years, of both sexes, who use ankle foot orthoses and to be able to walk without assistance of another person. Functional status was evaluated using the GMFCS. The TUG was evaluated by the average of three attempts with and without ankle foot orthoses. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the TUG between the conditions with and without orthoses (p = 0.73). There was a strong correlation between the GMFCS and performance time in the TUG in both conditions (r> 0.7; p <0.05). Discussion: The use of ankle foot orthoses did not alter their functional performance. Conclusion: These data suggest that the use of ankle foot orthoses does not improve performance in mobility task, using as parameter the TUG, despite the high correlation between the TUG and the GMFCS. Indicating that the TUG can be used to assess the functional capacity of children. Are suggested longitudinal studies to evaluate the effect of orthoses in these children.
