Therapeutic Diet Modification in Short Bowel Syndrome
2019
Abstract Oral nutrition is the foundation of intestinal rehabilitation and adaptation. Resection of the small bowel and/or lack of colon may lead to malabsorption of nutrients, fluid, and electrolytes. Nutrition recommendations are individualized to optimize absorption, minimize or alleviate the need for parenteral nutrition, and maintain the patient’s fluid, electrolyte, and nutritional status. Specific dietary recommendations including fat, complex carbohydrates, sodium, and oxalate content vary based on the patient’s remaining anatomy, disease state, age, and lifestyle. Oral rehydration solutions are integral in preventing dehydration and preserving electrolytes. Dietary advice will need continuous tailoring as adaptation occurs.
