Slope Stability and Landslides

2018
In the present study, robust closed form solution is developed to compute the seismic factor of safety of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills resting on different foundation soil. Five different types of the foundation have been studied. A two-part wedge mechanism followed by limit equilibrium method is used to derive the expressions for a factor of safety of typical side hill type MSW landfills. The acceleration (surface/input) ratios computed in the present study are in good agreement with the DEEPSOIL results. Results from the present study showed that the foundation type has a significant effect on the seismic stability of MSW landfills. For the given input parameters, it is observed that the landfill on shallow sand deposit has the least stability because of higher net amplification compared to other foundation types.
