La diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world, is considered a public health problem by high mortality rates, the impact on the quality of life and the complications and disabilities. We performed a descriptive study, correlation and cross-sectional in 200 type 2 diabetic patients, treated at the service of Endocrinology at the University Hospital of Los Andes in order to determine the functionality family support network and its relationship with the levels of glycemia. The questionnaire was applied Family Apgar and questionnaire MOS social support. Results: The mean age of 54 years, female predominance. Most married, studied up to sixth grade and belong to the working class. The time to disease progression was more than 15 years. One quarter of patients is at a stage of dispersion and independence. The disease started in the early stage of young adult, with an evolution of 12 to 16 years in groups of 65 and more years. More than three quarters had good support network. There was a statistically significant relationship between age, time of evolution of diabetes, blood glucose control and social support network.
