Analyzing Selfie Opportunities and Trends in a Chinese Context

While technology has improved to a great extent in recent years, users have more channels to express themselves. Selfie, as the latest fad, has rapidly risen into public view and formed a related culture. This study focuses on trends and opportunities arising from selfie behavior in a Chinese context that promotes the User eXperience. It aims to understand using the scenario of taking, editing, retrieving, and sharing selfies. By reviewing scientific literature, industry reports, and popular selfie applications, the research team analyzes and presents six trends of the selfie: 1) selfie booth with entertainment features, 2) double-scene selfie, 3) groupie, 4) selfie and recognition of emotion, 5) selfie with covering the face, 6) interactive guide of selfie expression and action. The outcomes reveal potential user needs in the current background of trends in the selfie industry, as well as assist researchers and designers in getting inspirations for providing a better selfie experience.
