Synthesis ofPoly(3-Hydroxybutyrate-Co-3-Hydroxyvalerate) fromMethanol andn-AmylAlcohol bytheMethylotrophic Bacteria Paracoccus denitrtificans and Methylobacterium extorquens

1992
whenmethanol andn-amyl alcohol wereaddedtogether tonitrogen-limited medium. Thecomposition ofthecopolyester differed considerably between thetwostrains: thecopolyester fromP.denitrificans wascomparatively richin3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV). The3HVcontent ofthecopolyester synthesized bythis strain increased withincreasing concentrations ofn-amyl alcohol. Itsmaximumcontent was91.5mol%undertheconditions used.InM.extorquens, the maximum3HVcontent waslimited to38.2mol%.Since n-amyl alcohol served asasubstrate forastandard methanol dehydrogenase, theenzyme wasproposed tooxidize bothmethanol andn-amyl alcohol inthefirst step ofcopolyester synthesis fromthese substrates bymethanol-grown cells.
