Photochemical and redox switching in a ring-closed isomer of thioindigo-extended quinone

A new dispiro π-system having a bis(2,6-di-tert -butylcyclohexadienone) unit was synthesized and characterized. Photoirradiation gave an ESR-active bis(phenoxy) radical and electrochemical reduction formed a bis(phenoxide) ion both by ring-opening.
