Femtosecond terawatt laser system to produce artificial rain

2009
In this paper an application of computer controlled laser system for creating artificial rain in the atmosphere has been demonstrated. The laser pulse breaks the bond of N 2 and O 2 and produces excited N* and O*. These excited species take part in endothermic reactions and abstract tremendous amount of heat from the surrounding. This creates cooling, resulting in precipitation and rain fall.
