Survey and Energy-use pattern of Conventional and Non conventional Energies for Domestic Applications and Suggestions on Improvements towards Sustainability

There have been shortages of oil in many parts of the world as a source of energy and the price of this commodity has increased steeply. It is clear that the fossil fuel era of non-renewable resources is gradually coming to an end and predicted that oil and natural gases will be depleted first, followed eventually by coal. Non-conventional energy sources are the one which are non-exhaustible, which can be continuously used. Some of the non-conventional energy sources are solar energy, wind energy, ocean thermal energy, geo-thermal energy, tidal energy, energy from biomass. The solar energy is very large inexhaustible source of energy. The power from the sun intercepted by the earth is approximated 1.8*1011MW, which is thousands time larger than the present consumption rate on the earth. Sullia is a place which is having great opportunity to use solar energy in almost every season except in rainy season. The application of solar energy for domestic purpose is inevitable in the days to come. Keeping this in the mind it is required to get an idea about the quantity of fuel utilized, the temperature attained and time consumed to boil the rice using different various fuels are very essential. The fuels used here are LPG, Kerosene and Wood. By using these fuels for cooking the given quantity of rice the experiment is conducted. Pressure cooker of 3 liter capacity is being used for cooking at a pressure of 15psi. The thermocouple is attached to measure the temperature. The time taken to cook the rise is noted by using a stop watch. The amount of fuel consumed. The results are compared with the usage of solar energy and the advantage of solar energy is discussed.
