Advances in the Research on Ophthalmic Drug Delivery System

OBJECTIVE To review the development of ophthalmic drug delivery system.METHODS The research articles of ophthalmic drug delivery system in recent years were referred and summarized,and its prospect was also discussed.RESULTS Colloidal drug delivery system is very potential in the treatment of a gamut of diseases.Targeted drug delivery can overcome many barriers and make drugs possible to accumulate at the diseased region.In situ-forming hydrogels enhance the residence time significantly.Biodegradable implants have the advantage of not requiring surgical excision after its contents are exhausted.Ocular iontophoresis significantly lower the invasion to the tissue.CONCLUSION The application prospect of ophthalmic drug delivery systems in the treatment of ocular diseases is much wider with the development of clinical medicine,pharmaceutics,polymer materials and the application of novel technologies.
