A new method for the quantitative analysis of penetration processes into the stratum corneum is described, based on the combination of the well-known method of tape stripping with UV/VIS spectroscopic measurements. This method is used to assess the efficacy of sunscreens by determining the local distribution of topically applied UV filter substances as well as the spectral intensity distribution in relation to the horny layer profile. It can also be employed to investigate the penetration behavior of topical drugs with various formulations. No penetration of titanium dioxide microparticles into living epidermis was found.
