The Treatment of Recurrent Tonsillitis With Broncasma Berna Instead of Tonsillectomy

To the Editor. —Tonsillectomy is one of the most common operations performed in the world. However, tonsillectomy involves various risks, eg, shock, bleeding, post-tonsillectomy pain, infection, asthma or allergic rhinitis after tonsillectomy, and anesthetic accidents. I have found a simple method for preventing attacks of recurrent tonsillitis. Each of the 72 patients between the ages of 5 and 67 years who suffered from recurrent tonsillitis between 1979 and 1990 was given a 0.05-mL injection of Broncasma Berna once in a 4-to 14-day period subcutaneously or intramuscularly, from three to 20 times in total. This method prevented 68 of the 72 patients from having attacks of recurrent tonsillitis. Most of the cases were followed up for a long time; the longest case was for 10 years. Three patients who relapsed into recurrent tonsillitis in spite of tonsillectomy were cured by Broncasma Berna completely. I presume that general immune systems produce stronger
