Evaluation of criteria for achievement of schistosomiasis control in Wuhan, China.

Objective To evaluate the status of schistosomiasis control in the City of Wuhan in 2007.Methods In accordance with national standards for schistosomiasis control and eradication,schistosomiasis in residents and cattle was investigated and snails were also studied in 7 districts,i.e.Hongshan,Caidian,Hannan,Huangpi,Jiangxia,Dongxihu,and Jiang′an,in the City of Wuhan.Results From 2004 to 2006,the infection rate for residents was 3.06%,0.93%,and 0.56%,and the number of patients with acute schistosomiasis totaled 14,10,and 4.The infection rate for cattle was 0.88%,1.39%,and 0.67%.The area of land with snails totaled 1 351.301,1 343.916,and 1 341.829 hm2 in the City of Wuhan.In 2007,the average infection rate for residents in the Hongshan,Caidian,Hannan,Huangpi,and Jiangxia districts was 0.67%,and the average infection rate for cattle was 0.69%.In the Dongxihu and Jiang′an districts,blood tests were positive at a rate of 3.47% and 1.71%,respectively.Stool examinations of humans and cattle were negative for schistosomes.There were no infected snails in the two districts.Conclusion From 2004 to the present,the incidence of schistosomiasis has tended to decrease each year in the City of Wuhan.The 5 districts of Hongshan,Caidian,Hannan,Huangpi,and Jiangxia have achieved infection control standards,and the 2 districts of Dongxihu and Jiang′an have achieved transmission control standards.
