Disk AIDS for women: experiences of the Centro Corsini in Campinas.

1999
In response to the high rates of HIV-related death among young low-income women in Campinas Brazil Centro Corsini aimed to disseminate Disk-AIDS at adolescent girls and young adults between 15 and 25 years old who were sexually active had low income and limited access to information. The campaign project was implemented from February 17 to March 17 1997 with financial support from US Agency for International Development through the AIDS Control and Prevention Projects Rapid Response Fund. Disk-AIDS is a telephone information service staffed by professionals specially contracted and trained to answer questions related to HIV/AIDS issues. The main objective of the project was to increase the number of women who used the service by 100% aiming at increasing their consciousness on issues related to HIV/AIDS/sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and encouraging prevention behavior with their partners and family members. Overall the campaign was able to achieve its objectives and highlighted questions that will help maintain a telephone information and orientation service on HIV/AIDS/STDs and better address the needs of the users. The campaign also provided subsidies to develop new orientation and prevention programs.
