The literary review that focused on preparation and use of ester-amides of tartaric acid has been performed. Known methods of preparations of 4-ethoxycarbonyl-2,2-dimethyl-5-[N-(4-vinylbenzyl)carbamoyl]-1,3-dioxolane were summarized and experimentally evaluated. Starting, optically pure, (+)-diethyl-L-tartrate was protected as a cyclic acetal with acetone, hydrolysed and chloridated to obtain monoethyl ester chloride. 4-Vinylbenzylamine was prepared by reaction of 4-vinylbenzyl chloride with potassium phtalimide followed by hydrazinolysis. 4-Vinylbenzylamine was acylated by monoethyl ester chloride to obtain target molecule. Products were characterized by 1H and 13C NRM spectroscopy, FT-IR spec-troscopy and high resolution mass spectrometry.
