Synthesis of 8-Methoxyquinoline and 5-Nitro-8-methoxyquinoline and their Biological Activities

2014
Quinoline is a heterocyclic aromatic compound which serves as a feedstock for the synthesis of other and lead candidates of compounds having various pharmacological and herbicidal activities. 8-methoxyquinoline was synthesized using 8- Hydroxyquinoline as a starting material and the product yield was (815mg, 71%), the retardation factor was found to be 0.58, the IR showed aromatic absorption at 3049/cm, 892-649/cm. The 5-Nitro-8-Methoxyquinoline was also synthesized using 8-methoxyquinoline as starting material and the product percentage yield was 77% and melt at 1150C. The IR showed NO2 absorption at 1338/cm, aromatic absorption at 2914/cm, 930-620 /cm. The two products were screened for their biological activities. The 8-Methoxyquinoline showed strong antifungal activity against Aspergilius Flavus, Aspergilius nigea and Trichopython, also exhibited strong antibacterial activities against Bacillus substilis, Salmonella spp and Salmonella typhi than 5-Nitro-8-Methoxyquinoline. This biological properties exhibited by 8-methoxyquinoline showed that it may be a very good candidate for the synthesis of pharmaceutical products.
