Fuzzy-Based Approach Using Enhanced Function Point to Evaluate the Performance of Software Project

Performance measurement is a fundamental building block of total quality management and a total quality organization. It is a measurement indicator for software development projects to define, understand, collect and analyze data, and prioritize through valid comparisons and make appropriate improvements. One of the indicators is Effort Estimation which helps in managing overall budgeting and planning. Size and complexity of the software can be derived from function point analysis method. This paper discusses a model for effort estimation, which focuses on minimizing the effort by enhancing the adjustments made to the functional sizing techniques. The idea of grouping the adjustment factors is introduced to simplify the process of adjustment and to ensure more consistency in the adjustments. The proposed method uses fuzzy logic for quantifying the quality of requirements and this quality factor is added as one of the adjustment factors. Effort estimation is calculated using the proposed model taking hospital desktop application and HR application as case studies. A comparative study of effort estimation between function point sizing (using FP and productivity) and the proposed model is analyzed. The other measurement indicators are project duration, schedule predictability, requirements completion ratio and post-release defect density which are also calculated for the above case studies.
