BIM, A Large 10-MJ Magnet
1995
A decision was reached late in 1966 to build a large 10-MJ magnet producing a central field of 4 T. This magnet was not designed for a specific application but rather as a prototype for the purpose of studying the technology and the operation of a large superconducting coil Therefore, rather small safety factors have been incorporated in this magnet at its nominal values of operation. Yet, after satisfying tests, this magnet can be used with a special cryostat in an operational installation such as a bubble chamber or a plasma study.
