Agnes had started her philanthropic work earlier – founding St Monica’s Orphanage in Vauxhall, an extremely poor area, in 1878. 3 By the turn of the century Agnes had both the time and the financial resources to pursue other philanthropic initiatives. She was particularly motivated to to start an organisation to help young unmarried women of the professional and upper classes who found themselves pregnant, as she felt strongly that there was no provision for this particular group.
