Note on the Phylogenetic Systematics of the Family Pteronarcyidae (Plecoptera), with a Description of the Eggs and Nymphs of the Asian Species

1988
The phylogeny of the Pteronarcyidae is reassessed using data from previously unavailable life history stages of the Asian species and those from earlier studies by other workers. Eggs and nymphs are described for the Asian species of this family, Pteronarcys sachalina Klapalek and P. reticulata (Burmeister). The data matrix (12 species by 75 characters) is analyzed using the PENNY (parsimony method) and CLIQUE (compatibility method) options of the PHYLIP program and the microcomputer MacClade (parsimony method) program. The shortest tree, 92 steps, produced by these programs most closely resembles a phylogeny proposed earlier. The family's classification is revised; the recently proposed tribes, Pteronarcellini and Pteronarcyini, are rejected. The distribution pattern is correlated with Paleozoic-Cenozoic geological eras.
