THE SYNTACTIC STRUCTURE OF RELATIVE CLAUSE IN PRAMOEDYA ANANTA TOER’S NOVEL “IT’S NOT AN ALL NIGHT FAIR” TRANSLATED BY C. W. WATSON

Syntax is the component of a grammar which determines how words are combined together to form phrases and sentence. It derives from Chomsky means the study of the principles and processes by which sentences are constructed in particular language. The writer interests in discussing syntactic structure of relative clause because in using syntax is important and need deep understanding to get the arrangement and relationship among words, phrases, and clauses. The understanding syntax is important especially in novel it helps the readers to understand the story well. The aims of this research are (1) To find types of relative clause; (2) To find the patterns of the relative clause; (3) To find the syntactic structures of relative clause in the novel.
The writer applies the theory of syntax by Chomsky (2002) as the main theory. This research is qualitative research by Creswell (1997). This research uses descriptive method and content analysis in Analyzing the data by Ratna (2011) and uses documentation for collecting the data by Sugiono (2009). The data are taken from the primary data, namely It’s Not An All Night Fair novel by Pramoedya Ananta Toer.
The result of this thesis shows that (1) there are two types of relative clause in the novel It’s Not An All Night Fair, namely, Restrictive and Nonrestrictive (2) there are two pattern relative clause in the novel It’s Not An All Night Fair, namely, Relative Adverb and Relative Pronoun (3) there are two structure relative clause in the novel It’s Not An All Night Fair, namely, Deep Structure and Surface Structure.
