Chemicals From Lignin

2017
Lignin is the only natural source of aromatic compounds; it can serve as a renewable and sustainable source of specialty liquid fuels and chemicals. However, current technology has largely been limited to the use of lignin as combustion fuel, and the valorization of lignin into value-added products remains underdeveloped. This article provides a brief review on products that can be derived from lignin, their utilization, and potential commercial value. Furthermore, environmental and sustainability benefits from lignin depolymerization and upgrading by different technologies are discussed.
