Comparison between conventional Open Reduction and Internal Fixation and Minimally Invasive Plate Osteosynthesis for Treatment of Distal Tibia Fractures

2019
Purpose: To compare the results of distal tibiafractures treated by conventional open reduction andinternal fixation (ORIF) with minimally invasiveplate osteosynthesis (MIPO).Methods: A prospective randomized controlled studyof 40 patients with distal tibia fractures (Type A,AO/OTA classification) in Qena university Hospitalfrom May, 2017 to February, 2018. These patientswere diagnosed as closed fracture or open fracturegrade I by Gustilo classification. Twenty were treatedby ORIF and Twenty were treated by MIPO usingplates. The operating time, bone union time, functional outcome were analyzed at a 6-monthfollow-up.Results: Operating time, bone ,union time, ,functional outcome were not significantly differentbetween both groups. Conclusion: The results of distal tibia fracturestreated by ORIF with MIPO were not significantlydifferent.
