The invention relates to a vehicle component (12; 40) made of plastic, in particular a vehicle outer skin component, with at least a supporting layer (24, 30), having at least an outer skin (22) and having at least one tear-resistant anti-shatter layer. According to the invention the anti-shatter layer as chip protection fabric (26, 32) is formed in the at least one supporting layer or between two adjacent layers (24, 28; 28, 30; 30, 34) embedded. By the splinter protection fabric edged fractures of the vehicle component can be avoided in an accident.
